Nottingham Forest and Manchester United meet in the first leg of the League Cup semifinals. Forest, which hosts the first leg at the City Ground, was a four-time League Cup winner under Brian Clough between 1978-90 and is in the semifinals for the first time in 31 years. It is their worst trophy drought in 40 years but there have been signs of progress under Ten Hag. But his host just misses the target as the ball whizzes past into the crowd. Man United is toying with the ball at the moment, enjoying possession, marching up the pitch and now Fred tries a shot from distance. Gibbs-White steals the ball off Casemiro and tries to fins the top corner.

On the stroke of halftime the Magpies had a seemingly legitimate goal chalked off for handball as Joelinton turned in from close range after a Willock break down the left, however referee Stuart Atwell deemed the ball hit the Brazilian’s hand. He had an age to line it up, a poor, poor finish from a player who is struggling in the final third this season. “In terms of meeting and greeting players, that can be done by other people. Having drawn a blank in three of their last four Premier League games, the Magpies started this one in no mood to see that run continue. “It’s been a good day but there’s still a long way to go in the tie. Howe resisted the temptation to shuffle his pack after scoring just once in their last four games.

Carabao Cup Semi-Final first legs: What the managers said (EFL)

Eddie Howe, Newcastle United manager said: "A tough game. Both sides had their moments and had chances to win the game but we know it's only half-time and ...

We have to do the same, we have to invest, we have to prepare, we have to make a good gameplan and the players have to be focused." To concede late on is disappointing, and in the way we did.“I won’t lose sight of the fact we did alright at times in the first half and steadied the ship in the second half. Rashford is one of the most in-form players in the country at the moment, so for us to allow him to do what he did is disappointing.“The second goal, we came off the game-plan and the timing of it. That is what we have to be aware of, that is where we have to improve. It has been a good day but there’s still a long way to go in the tie." In the first half we didn't quite get the press right, the second half I thought we were excellent."

Things we noticed at Forest (Manchester United)

Pellistri’s perseverance in the box was also another key contributor to Bruno Fernandes’s injury-time goal. The boss chose to start David De Gea, and the Spaniard once again played an important role for United. Erik said United are better with Antony in the team, and that was certainly the case at The City Ground. In the second half, he was influential too, laying the ball off for Christian Eriksen, who crashed an effort off the crossbar. The Dutchman also challenged our no.21 to deliver even more, and in turn, Antony was lively once again in our latest outing, during another win. The United supporters were very happy with that one, as Wout Weghorst got on the scoresheet for the first time as a Red.

The goal of Rashford against Arsenal, he was part of it. I think the goal of Bruno at Crystal Palace, was part of it because he makes the right move to the front post. The next game for Manchester United is on Saturday when they host Reading in the FA Cup.

Carabao Cup semi-finals preview: Nottingham Forest vs Manchester ... (The Athletic)

It's Carabao Cup semi-final time — Newcastle and Manchester United are the favourites to progress but can their opponents spring a surprise?

[Casemiro](https://theathletic.com/football/player/casemiro-wQ6Q8xViV8kqizDc/) was forced out of the defeat by [Arsenal](https://theathletic.com/football/team/arsenal/) with a one-match Premier League ban so he will be available for selection again on Wednesday evening. [Dean Henderson](https://theathletic.com/football/player/dean-henderson-ykbiJB1KvfXx9KDL/) who was the hero of the quarter-final having saved two penalties from [Ruben Neves](https://theathletic.com/football/player/ruben-neves-EPq8p3htT12DEefc/) and Joe Hodge. Whereas, by keeping the semi-finals at the stadiums of the involved teams, it represents a financial gain rather than a loss. January and February are typically busy months in the English football calendar. Using Wembley for Carabao Cup semi-finals would make the two competitions far too similar. [Sam Surridge](https://theathletic.com/football/player/sam-surridge-uWCVjxahGtG1gBzZ/), who scored an equaliser for Forest at Bournemouth, could start. For the first six years of the competition’s lifetime, the final was two-legged. After beating lower-league opposition in the last two rounds, the semi-final poses a different challenge for Erik ten Hag and his players. A cup run might sometimes be seen as a distraction but it has helped continue to build momentum for Eddie Howe’s side. No one gave Nathan Jones’ side a chance in the quarter-final, yet they managed to beat Manchester City 2-0 and didn’t concede a shot on target. They go into Tuesday’s first leg bottom of the Premier League and in danger of relegation after 11 years at the top level. On Tuesday, St Mary’s hosts the first of the semi-finals.

Southampton v Newcastle: Carabao Cup semi-final, first leg – live (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Join Scott Murray for updates from the first leg at St Mary's.

They’ve shown a few replays of the incident, and nothing egregious sticks out. Seems it was ruled out on the pitch for a Joelinton handball; however, from one of those angles, the ball seemed to hit the Newcastle forward on the side of his body only. Just a free kick, nothing more, a yard or so outside the box on the right. Armstrong is a concussion substitution, by the way. Mara’s presence forces Schar into the concession of a corner on the right. Almiron one-twos with Longstaff and enters the Saints box from the right. 62 min: Walker-Peters drives down the right and crosses for Ward-Prowse, who becomes the next player to try a Mark Hughes Special. Armstrong can’t force the rebound home from a tight angle, then the ball breaks to Lyanco on the edge of the box. Armstrong beats Burn to the ball, and bundles it into the bottom-left corner of the net! Over the bar the ball flies. A cross comes looping into the Newcastle box from the right. 70 min: Down the left, Edozie drops a shoulder to get past Trippier again with absurd ease.
