It has reportedly held talks with top-tier VCs including Sequoia Capital, though discussions are still at an early stage and it remains to be seen if they will succeed. Analysts believe the capabilities displayed by ChatGPT could be useful in dozens of applications, and perhaps even [rival Google LLC in online search](https://siliconangle.com/2023/01/04/report-microsoft-will-add-chatgpt-powered-search-feature-bing/). The result is a fun website that lists multiple AI chatbots based on Character.ai’s models, where anyone can chat with a virtual Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Chinese President Xi Jingping, the infamous Walter White of “Breaking Bad,” and many other characters real and fictional. It has reportedly created a neural language model chatbot web application based on LaMDA that is able to generate humanlike text responses and participate in contextual conversation. Character AI, meanwhile, has told investors it’s seeking $250 million in fresh funding, according to a report Friday in [The Information](https://www.theinformation.com/articles/character-seeks-250-million-in-new-funding-amid-ai-boom). The principles haven’t been revealed, but Anthropic says they’re based on concepts such as beneficence, non-maleficence and autonomy. Currently, it’s only available in beta via a Slack integration, though reports say that it has demonstrated significant improvements over its more famous rival. Started by former OpenAI employees, it has already raised more than $700 million in funding. ChatGPT has amazed more than 1 million users through its ability to answer almost any kind of question with humanlike clarity.

Despite the excitement, few of these startups have a clear plan to make money. But that strategy has been less of a sure bet in recent years as startups have expanded beyond the tech industry’s bread and butter of selling software or selling ads. So a bad bet now could lead to a missed opportunity to make money on other deals down the line. The explosion of interest in generative AI has investors and startups racing to choose their teams. Silicon Valley has been gripped by a frenzy over startups working on “generative” AI, technologies that can generate text, images and other media in response to short prompts. The startup, which was founded in 2021, previously raised $704 million, valuing it at $4 billion, according to PitchBook, which tracks private investment data.
