Popes on a Plane: How the Boeing 747 changed the Catholic ... (America Magazine)

So Pope Francis used his first papal flight to travel to the Sicilian island of Lampedusa, where tens of thousands of migrants were landing, looking for refuge in Europe. [Francis preached at Mass that day](https://www.americamagazine.org/after-lampedusa), quoting God’s words to Cain after the death of Abel. Concepts like “the universal church” or “the Holy See” moved from the realm of the abstract to something that could be tangible and personal for Catholics. When Paul VI flew to the Holy Land in January of 1964, it was the first time a pope had left Italy in 150 years. Popes have been able to bring messages of hope and courage to people in need. On the one hand, it made Rome, the Vatican and the pope accessible to people from around the world. It was also the first papal pilgrimage to the Holy Land ever in the history of Christianity. One thing that might not be as obvious is the degree to which the easy air travel introduced by the 747 changed the church, as well. The 747 made it possible for more people to fly and fly farther. 9, 1969, had almost three times the seating of any other plane at the time and a fuel capacity that allowed it to travel almost twice as far as the 707, more than 8,000 miles—basically the distance from New York to Cape Town, or Calcutta to Los Angeles.

NTSB releases preliminary investigation report of Jan. 7 crash that injured two men.

The pilot seated in the forward seat, reported that a preflight and flight control check was performed prior to departure. The airplane came to rest on a storage facility roof, with substantial damage to both wings and the fuselage. The NTSB’s preliminary report contains factual information collected on scene, but does not have a cause, according to the NTSB website. “The airplane departed to the north and started a slight right turn,” according to Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B), which periodically transmits information with no pilot or operator involvement required, data referenced in the report. “Shortly after departing the airport, the pilot leveled off and started a right turn,” according to the recently released preliminary investigation report. “The pilot soon realized that the airplane just wanted to turn right and would not turn left, despite his actions.

'Plane' Actor Mike Colter was Shocked to Learn His Cousin is This ... (Showbiz Cheat Sheet)

Mike Colter may be starring in massive blockbusters now, but when he was a teenager, he was shocked to learn he already had a famous cousin!

Colter told the hosts that Davis’ career was starting to pick up at the time, and he was a massive fan of hers. A year later, he began playing the character in his own series, and also appeared in The Defenders. Hollywood is a small place, and although nepotism is rampant in the industry, some A-listers have made it on their own. His entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe came in 2015 when he appeared in Netflix’s Jessica Jones as Colter made his big screen debut in 2004 when he starred in the Clint Eastwood movie Million Dollar Baby playing boxer Big Willie Little. Colter has been in the acting business for years, but he was shocked to learn his cousin is this Oscar winner.

He told everybody that he would try flying the plane, as waiting for the rescue forces was not a possibility that they could entertain as they knew that the separatists were going to hit back with full force. Brodie was thankful that he was still alive and could see his daughter. Gaspare and Brodie attacked them and came to know that the passengers had been taken to a village called Dandulit. Gaspare took the emergency money that Shellback had brought with him and escaped into the wild. Brodie knew that the separatists would kill him, as being the captain meant that they could extort huge amounts of money from his government. Brodie had noticed while landing that there was a facility somewhere nearby that probably had telephones and he wanted to take Gaspare with him because he didn’t feel comfortable leaving such a hardened criminal with the passengers. Brodie realized that they didn’t have a lot of options, and if they wanted to save the passengers, he would have to surrender. Gaspare and Brodie left together, and the former was surprised by the kind of confidence and trust the latter had shown in him. Brodie couldn’t believe it when she cut the call and told him that as long as he wouldn’t be able to tell his badge number, she wouldn’t be able to help him. The spearmen had taken all the passengers into custody, and though Brodie wanted to intervene, Gaspare stopped him from doing so as he knew that they would still kill the passengers even if Brodie went there. Dele realized they were in Jolo island, in the southwest Philippines, and the nervousness on his face made it clear that it was not the kind of place anyone would want to be. Brodie worked as a pilot for Trailblazer Airlines, and before flying out of Singapore, he and his copilot, Samuel Dele, noticed that there was a possibility of a storm coming their way.

Our man Gerard Butler has strung together a few good genre films recently.

THEN he eyes a road on the island in the water, and sets this hunk of junk down just in the nick. It achieves takeoff and lands on the runway satisfactorily and satisfyingly, and aren’t you glad I didn’t plane-pun my way through this review? But little do the bad guys know, ol’ Cap’n Brodie isn’t just a highly competent pilot who’s steely under pressure, but he can leverage a mofo into a nasty chokehold, and also take a punch, which is a good thing, because he’s about to take more than a few. Of course he’s going to clench his teeth and sweat from his eyeballs as he grips the yoke and yells WE NEED ALL THE THRUST WE CAN GET and WE’RE LOSING ALTITUDE. As a wise man once said, this is a dilly of a pickle. Brodie calls in the head flight attendant Bonnie (Daniella Pineda) and says to her the thing we absolutely thought he’d have to say: “I never thought I’d have to say this: Prepare to ditch.” Brodie kisses a photo of his daughter and late wife (insert twinge of sadness here) and eyes the water. They’re not sure where they are and they have no means of communicating with the execs and whoever sitting in a dark board room, most crucially the owner of the airline (Paul Ben-Victor) and the black-ops chief (Tony Goldwyn) called in to help. Brodie Torrance (Butler) to fight through a storm and save a few dimes on fuel instead of taking a longer route from Singapore to Tokyo. Now let’s see, red blobs on the weather radar, homicide suspect, an itch to get this over with – none of it bodes well.
