Why Web3 payment services will overcome legacy limitations (FinTech Magazine - The FinTech & InsurTech Platform)

Mark Smargon, founder and CEO of Fuse, discusses how Web3 will transform the payments space and overcome financial legacy limitations.

In particular, there is a need for mobile banking and other digital financial services to be available around the clock, with less friction, and with near-instantaneous processing times to keep up with changing consumer behaviour. But unfortunately, the traditional payment ecosystem isn’t well-equipped to adapt to the latest technological advancements and satisfy the demands of modern consumers. Adding to the gravity of the drawbacks, even though mobile banking infrastructure is readily available and accessible, a large chunk of the global population remains severely underbanked and unbanked. Because the security and transaction verification is distributed over a decentralised network of computers, the overall transaction costs also go down while the pace of transaction settlements quickens. While these numbers and the acceleration of mobile banking have unlocked several opportunities for financial organisations, it is also the epicenter of many unfolding challenges. While mobile banking can be a convenient and helpful tool, it has its limitations.

Deciding the right payment gateway for your business (Economic Times)

One must not commit too quickly to choosing a payment gateway for the sake of having it. That will help a business bounce back with the services of a payment gateway of one’s choice. If one chooses a wrong plan, one may fail to capture many payments and this may lead to customers blaming the company and losing trust. One must ensure the payment gateway complies with security standards, such as PCI-DSS to protect customer information. The right payment gateway makes it easier for customers to pay for the services or goods that they like. Such restrictions may make them ask for a cash payment option and, if one fails to offer that, the opportunity to sell might be lost.

Payment apps can be unsafe if improperly used: Here's why (Gulf News)

Fraud prevention experts recommend these strategies to keep your money safe.

When I faced such a scam, I followed the recommended step of canceling the payment request and never heard from my scam artist again. You can also report your fraud to the government website that shares information with law enforcement. If you do that, and you’re careful in terms of what number you are sending money to, these apps can be a convenient, safe and efficient way to move money,” says Paul Benda, senior vice president of operational risk and cybersecurity at a US-based trade association for the banking industry. As per multiple payment app guidelines, you should cancel the request without paying. Generally, peer-to-peer payment apps are designed to send money between friends — not strangers. Additionally, you can take a screenshot and forward it to the relevant phishing or customer service resource centre.

Oops, I Venmoed the wrong person. What should apps do about ... (Fast Company)

A new deep dive into payment apps from Consumer Reports finds that users can sometimes be out of luck if they accidentally send money to a stranger.

“If you’re a consumer, you’re largely left to reach out to a recipient and hope for the best,” says Hand. “If your recipient has already enrolled with Zelle, the money is sent directly to your recipient’s bank account and cannot be canceled,” says a relevant “They don’t tend to be the holder of accounts,” she adds, so “the responsibility lies with banks” to be able to get money back that was sent to the wrong recipient. “You’re sort of left in limbo to see if you can get your money back or not.” As such, if you do accidentally send money to a stranger—particularly one you can’t contact or track down—you may have to chalk it up as a loss, although it might not hurt to get in touch with the app (or your bank) to see if something can be done. While Venmo and other apps will look into mistaken payments for users, it may be best practice not to get your hopes up that the situation can be mitigated. Once a payment is sent, the funds are available to the recipient right away.” However, a PayPal spokesperson does tell Fast Company that “each situation is reviewed on a case-by-case basis, as we strive to help any customer experiencing challenges resolve their issue. Often, the only recourse is to try and ask the recipient for the money back, and hope that they give it. The problem for users is that there isn’t typically an easy way to get their money back if you do send it to the wrong person. “It has to do with the nature of the relationships between payment apps and banks—payment apps largely facilitate payments,” Hand says. If a user believes they’ve been scammed, however, the company recommends reaching out to its support team. But payment apps aren’t without their potential pitfalls, and sometimes a simple mistake, like sending money to the wrong person, can be costly.

'Nearshoring' Trend Puts Spotlight on Cross-Border Payment Frictions (pymnts.com)

As companies look to "nearshore" their supply chains, the multichannel payment rails that make it all possible are also facing review.

However, outdated cross-border payment infrastructure continues to make that a challenge. A PYMNTS study, “New Payments Options: Why Consumers Are Trying Digital Wallets” finds that 52% of US consumers tried out a new payment method in 2022, with many choosing to give digital wallets a try for the first time. [B2B payments](https://www.pymnts.com/digital-payments/2022/automated-and-fully-integrated-erps-reduce-payment-delays-errors/) as a whole are growing increasingly digital, and 9 in 10 small-and-medium-sized business (SMB) owners [tell PYMNTS](https://www.pymnts.com/study/ap-ar-quick-start-guide-smb-b2b-payment-platforms/) that all-in-one payment platforms for B2B transactions save time and are more convenient. The lack of pre-existing connections between banks in established and emerging markets also makes cross-border transactions more expensive, as each bank the B2B funds are required to travel through is likely to charge its own money-movement fee.

Cash or cashless? How people pay (European Central Bank)

6 February 2023. By Ulrich Bindseil and Doris Schneeberger. The ECB has asked people in the euro area how they pay and which payment methods they prefer.

Still, cash is the preferred means of payment for 22% of those surveyed, largely because it helps to track people’s expenses and is more private. The study demonstrates that cash is still the most frequently used means of payment at point of sale, although its use in the euro area has declined.
