Poco X5 Pro 5G review: slimmed down and specced up | Stuff (Stuff)

The colourful cut-price cameraphone is back for a new generation. Does the Poco X5 Pro 5G build on what came before?

On the surface, there isn’t much that makes the Poco X5 Pro a worthy upgrade to the X4 Pro, but the extra power inside actually goes a long way to improve the user experience. Caveats aside, though, we enjoyed reviewing the Poco X5 Pro 5G. For a midrange phone, the Poco X5 Pro 5G’s screen specs read like a champ. Less good is the fact there haven’t been any meaningful updates to the camera beyond the addition of 4K video recording this time around. Running with the mantra of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, Xiaomi’s 5000mAh battery and 67W turbo charging are back for round two, powering the phone up in around 50 minutes and lasting all day long. We weren’t in a position to test the screen’s outdoor visibility to oblivion, after all, the UK is hardly Aruba this time of year. This octa-core CPU is clocked at up to 2.4GHz and a marked improvement over last year’s Snapdragon 695. It’s also easy to cover up with a case that comes with the phone, so the trade-off might be a smart one in the long term. Now, that isn’t to say the phone folds or bends, but by using flexible screen tech, it helped Xiaomi make the phone thinner, and shrink the bezel surrounding the screen. At the base is a USB-C port and a SIM slot, and at the top of the phone, there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack and IR blaster. [Poco X4 Pro 5G](https://www.stuff.tv/review/poco-x4-pro-5g-review/) a lot when we reviewed it, and almost a year after launch, it still has a sumptuous screen for the price, a decent main camera, rapid charging, and strong battery life. With CPU speeds being one of our main issues with the X4 Pro 5G, the bump up to Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G power is most welcome.

Xiaomi unveils Poco X5 Pro with Snapdragon 778G, Poco X5 joins (GSMArena.com)

The new Pro also upgrades the display (10-bit) and camera performance compared to last year's Poco X4 Pro. The vanilla X5 sticks to the Snapdragon 695 chip.

The Poco X5 Pro is headed to India next week (the rumors were right, the vanilla X5 will not be available there). The camera and battery are more akin to what a hypothetical vanilla Poco X4 might have been (Xiaomi never released such a phone). The vanilla model launches with the older MIUI 13 for Poco out of the box. This is not to say that the camera is without improvement – the Snapdragon 778G brings a faster ISP (2 gigapixels per second) and a more powerful NPU (12 TOPS). The display is 6.67” in size with the same FHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate as the Pro. Like the new Pro, it also has an 8/256GB version and does one better – it has a microSD slot for up to 1TB more (note this phone has a hybrid card slot). This means that the main module features a 108MP 1/1.52” sensor, which is joined by an 8MP ultra wide-angle module (120°) and a 2MP macro camera, plus a 16MP camera on the front. The chassis has been slimmed down, in fact, at 7.9mm it is the thinnest X-phone yet (and third thinnest in the Poco family, beaten only by a couple of F-phones). Additionally, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack, an IR blaster and (in some regions, at least) NFC. The Poco X series typically delivers a high refresh rate screen, a large, fast-charging battery and a value for money chipset (leaving flagship performance to the F-phones). [Snapdragon 778G](qualcomm_announces_snapdragon_778g_chipset_x65_5g_modem-news-49189.php) – the 6nm chip (TSMC) with a flagship-grade Adreno 642L GPU. This year Xiaomi also equipped the Pro with double the base storage, 128GB, but kept the base RAM at 6GB.

Poco X5 Pro review: An ambitious mid-ranger (Pocket-lint.com)

Poco's latest powerful mid-ranger offers a great deal of performance and has a great big screen.

Its clarity and depth of field aren’t going to compete with the most expensive phones on the market, of course, but it’s plenty good enough for social media sharing. It’s more than good enough to get most people through a full workday, and the 67W fast charger that ships in the box means you’re never gripped by battery anxiety. We only really noticed one issue with the phone in our testing period and that was to do with listening to music. It’s not a two-day battery, and on heavier days with 3-4 hours of gaming, we’ve managed to drain it down below the red-accented 19 per cent mark. MIUI continues to be one of the more heavy-handed Android skins, with a number of - at best - counter-intuitive choices and - at worst - completely nonsensical ones. As we mentioned in the display section, there’s a really feeling of speed and fluidity about the Poco X5 Pro. The cheaper entry-level model comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage (again with RAM expansion). Other elements include the fact that it still has the control centre/settings widgets and notifications split between the two sides of the screen, so you can’t just swipe down from the middle to get notifications anymore. Usually, when buying phones in the lower end of the market you have to sacrifice somewhat in the display area, and yet with the X5 Pro, it doesn’t seem significantly hampered in any discernible area. There are - of course - differences between using this and using a much more expensive phone screen. It’s placed in the wake/sleep button on the side, and works quickly and reliably. We've been testing the 'Pro' model for a couple of weeks to see exactly how much bang you get for your buck.

Poco X5 Pro vs Poco X5: What's the difference? (Pocket-lint.com)

Poco has just unveiled its latest budget-friendly powerhouses, but exactly how do the two new X-series models compare?

The X5 Pro has faster charging, a faster processor, a better display and a better primary camera. On the surface, it's clear which of these two is the better phone, and it's no real surprise. The regular Poco X5 has a 48-megapixel primary sensor. Apart from that - again - the two phones are similar. Another major difference on the media side is that the X5 Pro also features a dual speaker set up for stereo sound. The Poco X5 Pro features Xiaomi's 67W fast charging tech, which means a full charge from empty in under 40 minutes. X5 Pro also has higher contrast ratio, but a peak brightness that's not quite as bright as the 1200 nits on the X5. Both come in black and blue variants, but the Pro comes in Poco's iconic yellow and black colourway, and the X5's third variant is green. You get glass on the front and plastic around the sides and on the back; although the flavour of glass is different. The X5 Pro has a completely flat back with right-angled edges. The Pro model features a newer Gorilla Glass 5, where the X5 regular has Gorilla Glass 3. The [Xiaomi](https://www.pocket-lint.com/phones/reviews/xiaomi/) sub-brand has kicked off its year with the Poco X5 and the Poco X5 Pro, but exactly how do the two compare?
