In a demonstration, the query “Will the Ikea Flippen loveseat fit into my 2019 Honda Odyssey if I fold down the seats?” elicited an AI-powered response that used details about the love seat’s measurements and the SUV’s cargo space drawn from webpages to estimate that the furniture “might fit with the second or third rows folded.” The company is asking people to sign up for a wider-ranging launch, which will occur in the coming weeks. Microsoft said the new version of Bing is available now as a preview, which means users can try a limited number of queries. ChatGPT and other generative AI search products aim to change that, replacing links that may or may not address a user’s query with a conversational, contextual answer. It also intends to bring the AI search features to rival web browsers. Asked for an egg substitute in recipes, Bing offered several choices and the measurements of each that equals one egg. Last week Microsoft unveiled a customer-management programme that uses OpenAI text-generation tools to compose emails for salespeople, and jazzed up the premium tier of its Teams chat and meeting software with AI-written post-meeting notes. The answers come with citations to their sources, so users can see where the information is coming from.

Last week Microsoft announced the startup’s AI will generate meeting notes in Teams, its collaboration software, as well as suggest email replies to vendors using its Viva Sales subscription. Bing will be powered by AI and run on a new “large language model” that is more powerful than ChatGPT, said Microsoft Consumer CMO Yusuf Mehdi. At the event, Mehdi demonstrated how the AI-enhanced search engine will make shopping and creating emails easier. The fruit of this work, however, is more immediate. Its human-like responses to any prompt have given people new ways to think about the possibilities of marketing, writing term papers or disseminating news, or even how to query information online. That could mean new competition for business customers using cloud and collaboration products as well as a vigorous return to consumer markets where Google now leads.

Test driving the new Bing (Search Engine Land)

I got early access to the new ChatGPT integrated Bing browser and decided to test it out.

The links did direct me to local and non-local centers and articles, and even a few ads. And again, you can’t actually click on any of the links it wants you to. Microsoft has a long way to go and there are a few kinks to work out, but I could see myself using this regularly. But you can hover over the official website text at the top, and that’ll open the Moore site in a new tab. Since I’m in Seattle, and being somewhat of a coffee connoisseur, I wanted to know what the best coffee shops in Seattle were. Except for the “You can find more information and reviews…” links below the hours aren’t actually links, so you can’t click on them. But I don’t feel like typing in the name, so I’ll just ask what the hours are for the “second one.” Let’s see if it knows what I mean. I thought it was going to give me one of the answers from the previous list. Let’s see if we can get some insight into the best food and drinks at Moore Coffee Shop. Except this time, you can hover over any underlined result to get more information and click on the attributed source. But this time I wanted to know which one it recommended. Like priority access to try out the new experience on Edge, Microsoft’s browser.

Reinventing search with a new AI-powered Microsoft Bing and Edge ... (Microsoft)

“AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search,” said Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, Microsoft. “ ...

With the Edge Sidebar, you can ask for a summary of a lengthy financial report to get the key takeaways – and then use the chat function to ask for a comparison to a competing company’s financials and automatically put it in a table. The work we are doing with OpenAI builds on our company’s yearslong effort to ensure that our AI systems are responsible by design. After that, you can ask it to help you update the tone, format and length of the post. The new Bing can generate the content to help you. We’ve also applied the AI model to our core Bing search ranking engine, which led to the largest jump in relevance in two decades. The chat experience empowers you to refine your search until you get the complete answer you are looking for by asking for more details, clarity and ideas – with links available so you can immediately act on your decisions. We’re reimagining how you interact with search, browser and chat by pulling them into a unified experience. The new Bing also cites all its sources, so you’re able to see links to the web content it references. We have developed a proprietary way of working with the OpenAI model that allows us to best leverage its power. Bing reviews results from across the web to find and summarize the answer you’re looking for. For example, you can get detailed instructions for how to substitute eggs for another ingredient in a cake you are baking right in that moment, without scrolling through multiple results. We think of these tools as an AI copilot for the web.

Microsoft fusing ChatGPT-like technology into search engine Bing (Al Arabiya English)

Microsoft is fusing ChatGPT-like technology into its search engine Bing, transforming an internet service that now trails far behind Google into a new way.

On the surface, at least, a Bing integration seems far different from what OpenAI has in mind for its technology. OpenAI started out as a nonprofit research laboratory when it launched in December 2015 with backing from Tesla CEO Elon Musk and others. Gartner analyst Jason Wong said new technological advancements will mitigate what led to Microsoft’s disastrous 2016 launch of the experimental chatbot Tay, which users trained to spout racist and sexist remarks. He said it is important to develop AI “with human preferences and societal norms and you’re not going to do that in a lab. And he used it to show how it could plan a vacation or help with shopping. In another example, he quizzed it on 1990s-era rap, showing its ability to distinguish between the song “Jump” by Kris Kross and “Jump Around” by House of Pain. Their opaqueness also makes it hard to source back to the original human-made images and texts they’ve effectively memorized, though the new Bing includes annotations that reference the source data. “Make sure to check the facts.” Along with adding it to Bing, Microsoft is also integrating the chatbot technology into its Edge browser. You have to do that out in the world.” CEO Satya Nadella said Tuesday that new AI advances are “going to reshape every software category we know,” including search, much like earlier innovations in personal computers and cloud computing. For now, everyone can try a limited number of queries, he said.

But it would be fair to say Bing is getting a lot of help from OpenAI and the large language models (LLM) that helped create ChatGPT. Microsoft's new Bing chatbot is fun but sometimes more cautious ... (CNBC)

Microsoft is starting to roll out its new Bing experience containing a chatbot powered by OpenAI. It's sometimes unwilling to do things that ChatGPT will.

Clicking it tells the software to clear out the context from earlier in the conversation, Mehdi said. [current version](https://www.bing.com/search?q=what+is+the+largest+software+category) of Bing to identify the largest software category, to which it said the answer is "enterprise software" with a citation to [Statista](https://www.statista.com/markets/418/topic/484/software/#overview). Gaining that much muscle mass could "require a lot of genetic potential, steroids, or both," Bing noted, linking out to an article from the Healthline website about the subject. At times the Bing chatbot opted not to do things that ChatGPT would do. Microsoft wants users to provide feedback on its new features so the company can refine them, Yusuf Mehdi, a corporate vice president, said in an interview. And the new chat feature will say that "one could argue that search advertising is the largest software category in the world by revenue," and hedges by noting there are many ways to evaluate different kinds of software. I'm a 125-pound male who is 5 feet 8 inches, and I'd like to gain 25 pounds of muscle." Bing not only presents lists of cinema, music, and literature representing German Expressionism, but it also gives users extra context about the artistic movement. When that prompt is entered into ChatGPT, the OpenAI tool generates three bulleted lists detailing examples of German Expressionism in film, music and literature. And it's similar to ChatGPT in that it provides a lot more information than you might expect from a traditional search. The new Bing can at times be more helpful, or at least more entertaining, than the usual blue links in search results. "This is the largest software category that exists, and it's incredibly profitable, incredibly large and still growing," Amy Hood, Microsoft's chief financial officer, said on the call.

Bing Webmaster Guidelines updated for “conversation mode” and AI (Search Engine Land)

Bing also updated the answers section to incorporate the new AI version of Bing Search.

For example, if a user types “How tall is the Eiffel Tower?” Bing will respond with the answer of “300 m”. Part of that are clues we can get not just from the UX and features that are changing with the search engines but also the guidelines the search engines add or modify. “Bing may enhance the results page with additional features to provide a richer search experience for some search queries. In some cases, Bing may partner with third-party content providers, such as local restaurant review sites, to further enhance the user experience.” If the query is related to a business, Bing may return relevant information about the business, such as store hours and location. For some queries, Bing looks at search results across the web, returns a summarized answer, and links to its sources.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was also onstage when Microsoft announced the new Bing. Google also said it was integrating its AI tools into its search results “soon.” Meanwhile, the new Edge browser will also feature AI, including a sidebar that can give you a summary of what you’re looking at or help you write a message to post on it. Microsoft's ChatGPT-Powered Bing Makes Search Interesting Again (The New York Times)

Google has stiff competition now, after Microsoft integrated powerful A.I. technology into its search engine.

Kevin Scott, the chief technology officer of Microsoft, and Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI, said in a joint interview on Tuesday that they expected these issues to be ironed out over time. Type in a prompt — say, “Write me a menu for a vegetarian dinner party” — and the left side of your screen fills up with the standard ads and links to recipe websites. (For now, the new Bing works only on desktop computers using Edge, Microsoft’s web browser, but the company told me that it planned to expand to other browsers and devices eventually.) When the new Bing works, it’s not just a better search engine. The implications for the future [could be profound](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/15/magazine/ai-language.html?action=click&pgtype=Article&state=default&module=styln-artificial-intelligence&variant=show®ion=MAIN_CONTENT_1&block=storyline_top_links_recirc). If it works, it could chip away at Google’s dominance and some of the more than $100 billion in annual search advertising revenue that comes with it. (Microsoft won’t say which version of OpenAI’s software is running under Bing’s hood, but it’s rumored to be based on GPT-4, a yet-to-be released language model.) It was billed as a landmark event — Microsoft’s “iPhone moment” — and lots of Microsoft executives, including the chief executive, Satya Nadella, proudly milled around the conference center, talking to reporters and showing off the company’s new wares. I felt a similar sense of awe this week when I started using the new, A.I.-powered Bing.
