DeSantis wanted to ban guns at event, but not to be blamed, emails ... (The Washington Post)

Tampa officials received a request to ban guns at Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis's election night party, a city official said in emails.

Representatives of the governor did not respond to questions from The Post about whether he would support an “open carry” provision in the bill. When he refused, the security guard asked the police to “remove” him, the report says. “It’s a very delicate balancing act because there are credible threats against public officials, but we also have to respect the public’s civil rights” to carry guns, he said. When DeSantis was serving in Congress in 2018, Florida’s GOP-controlled government passed a gun-control law following the massacre of 17 people at a high school in Parkland, Fla. The DeSantis campaign’s sensitivity to the issue was described in the correspondence between FDLE and Tampa officials in the days before the Nov. 20 event at a public building owned by the city of Alachua, a town near Gainesville, Fla., gun rights advocates warned in online posts that ticket holders would have to pass through metal detectors. Doing so enhances the ability of law enforcement officers and FDLE Protective Operations agents to work proficiently and quickly in the event of an emergency.” Less than a half-hour later, he received a emailed response from Nicole Travis, the city’s administrator of development and economic opportunity: “We are not saying anything about concealed carry. “DeSantis/his campaign will not tell their attendees they are not permitted to carry because of the political optics,” Chase Finch, the convention center’s safety and security manager, said in an Oct. The Governor is strongly in support of individuals’ constitutional right to bear arms.” Brian Kemp, could seek to capitalize on the issue, said Luis Valdes, Florida state director of Gun Owners of America. Tampa Convention Center officials ultimately rejected the request from the DeSantis campaign to ban weapons.

Aerospace: All Engineering Talents Wanted (DesignNews)

In addition to aeronautics or astronautics engineers, the aerospace industry needs propulsion engineers, structural designers, mechanical engineers, ...

They also want to carry that objective forward and help the industry be more reflective of society’s demographics. Dumbacher thinks another way to address the shortage of technical talent is through diversity and inclusion. Another is the perception that engineering is too hard and a lack of interest in math and science. One way to address the value perception is making the jobs more relevant to potential students by showing them the value to society. “What we are hearing more and more out of our corporate community is that mid-level experienced engineering positions are getting harder and harder to fill.” If you’re building something that’s going to leave the earth, whether it stays in our atmosphere or travels into space, you’re going to need a lot of engineers beyond an aeronautics or astronautics engineer.

The scene everyone was waiting for in 1994 is almost like a roleplay scenario where Crusher and Picard switch positions. Unfortunately, the captain soon finds himself in a jealous rage over this phantasmal entity which is really something referred to as an Soon, the passion burns out after Crusher finds out that she has really fallen for a parasite who is just using her lover’s body as a vessel to survive. Of course, this is exactly what Crusher does in a situation where she and the captain are butting heads over a woman from an alien civilization who is offered to Picard in marriage to end centuries of strife. The way her eyes flash from Vash to Picard and back is all you need to know. You know something is off with the captain when asks Crusher to have dinner in his quarters, almost like he’s giving an order. After a bar fight ignited by Vulcan violence in Ten Forward, there is so much irony in how he and Crusher discuss the overflow of Vulcan emotions when they are repressing their own. Too bad the spell breaks when he realizes a view screen is hiding in the bushes. Of course, she still has to deal with this curmudgeon giving her actual orders to stay awake, but even with him acting the captain in this situation, he sometimes lets go of that persona. While Jean-Luc Picard and emotion generally don’t mix, there is an element of something more than just concern when he reassures the doctor who has now found herself in a medical emergency. Picard and Crusher can go from approaching each other with the awkwardness of teens at prom to arguing like a couple married for ages. “I must say you wear it well.” When she continues to tease about taking a tour of his office, you know it’s not for the machinery.

Wanted: Dead Birds and Bats, Felled by Renewables (WIRED)

Scientists say collecting, studying, and storing the carcasses from wind and solar facilities can unlock new insights.

He, Katzner, and other stakeholders hope the carcasses will offer a wide array of wildlife biologists access to the animal samples they need for their work, and perhaps even provide insights into future scientific questions that researchers haven’t thought yet to ask. The feathers get tucked in paper envelopes and organized in filing boxes; the rest of the carcass is discarded. To this end, Katzner, Davis, and other biologists are working with the renewable energy industry to create a nationwide repository of dead birds and bats killed at wind and solar facilities. But there was a downside: While the sea breeze made Altamont ideal for wind energy, the area was also well used by nesting birds. The specimens that arrive at this facility in Boise, Idaho, are often long dead, and the bodies smell, he said, like “nothing that you can easily describe, other than yuck.” The pigeon is a demonstration specimen, but samples, including flesh and liver, are ordinarily frozen, cataloged, and stored in freezers.
