Unusual Deaths in NYC Are Still Up. Drug Overdoses Are the ... (The New York Times)

The rising tide of death that began during the pandemic is now the “new normal” for the New York City medical examiner's office.

[Black men in their 50s and 60s](https://www.nyc.gov/assets/doh/downloads/pdf/epi/databrief133.pdf) particularly hard, as well as the city’s homeless population. At least 815 homeless New Yorkers died in public spaces, shelters and hospitals during the 2022 fiscal year, the most on record, according to [city data](https://a860-gpp.nyc.gov/concern/nyc_government_publications/nc580q435?locale=en). Two months later, the same combination killed the [10-month old daughter](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/16/nyregion/daniel-auster-fentanyl-arrest.html) of Daniel Auster, the son of the author Paul Auster; Daniel himself died of an [overdose](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/27/style/daniel-auster-life-death.html) in 2022 after being charged in his daughter’s death. The patterns reflect national trends: Deaths from drug overdoses rose nationally to record-breaking levels in 2021, [nearing 108,000](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/11/us/politics/overdose-deaths-fentanyl-meth.html), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There’s also an increase in [designer benzos](https://accp1.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/cpdd.667#:~:text=Designer%20benzodiazepines%20(BZs)%20constitute%20a,United%20States%20or%20Western%20Europe.), meant to mimic drugs like Xanax, mirroring a trend in Europe. The toxicology lab is catching up from a backlog that began in early 2020, when the first wave of Covid-19 shut the lab for several months. The office is getting extra staff, and four new machines arrived in mid-February to speed up the processing of blood and tissue extracts, much to Dr. Drug overdoses used to account for around 60 percent of all accidental deaths in the city — a category including pedestrians struck by automobiles, industrial accidents and falls. But the decorations cannot mask the smell of formaldehyde, or the rows of jars and vials connected to a person who died of a suspected drug overdose. Forensic scientists by necessity must have a hard shell, but the scale of death they have faced in the last few years has sometimes astonished them. [ 2,700 drug overdose deaths](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/13/nyregion/new-york-overdose-record.html) in the city in 2021, the highest total in at least [two decades](https://www.nyc.gov/assets/doh/downloads/pdf/epi/databrief133.pdf), and 2022’s official toll is expected to be even higher. But by far the largest factor in the increased work at the medical examiner’s office — which investigates all the city’s sudden, unusual and suspicious deaths — is a sustained jump in accidental drug overdoses, mostly from the opioid fentanyl.

The air is getting thin for stock-market investors, warns Morgan Stanley strategist Mike Wilson.

Such are the tricks the death zone plays on the mind – one starts to see and believe in things that don’t exist,” says Wilson. “In the last few weeks of the year, we lost many climbers who pushed further ahead in the death zone,” he said. “They climb in pursuit of the ultimate topping out of greed, assuming they will be able to descend without catastrophic consequences.

"He was a good priest and a good bishop and a man of peace," Gomez said.
