One award was announced ahead of the show from the red carpet: “Top Gun: Maverick” won for best stunt ensemble. “The White Lotus” also took a victory lap, winning best ensemble in a drama series and another win for Jennifer Coolidge, coming off her wins at the Emmys and the Golden Globes. He’s also the first Asian to win best male supporting actor at the SAG Awards. Hong added that the cast of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” wasn’t all Chinese, though he granted Jamie Lee Curtis had a good Chinese name. He brought up the ignoble yellowface history of the 1937 film “The Good Earth.” Only one film (“Apollo 13”) had won all three and not gone on to win best picture at the Oscars. “It’s for every little girl that looks like me.” “I know you look at me and think ‘Nepo baby,’” said Curtis, who won in her first SAG nomination. “But look at us now!”

'Everything Everywhere All at Once' Star Michelle Yeoh's at the Table (IndieWire)

Best Actress nominee Michelle Yeoh ('Everything Everywhere All at Once') talks to IndieWire about getting a seat at the Oscars table.

It was Yeoh who made the apt decision that her character not be named Michelle, as “the audience will be connecting me to her all the time, and then she won’t get a voice, [and] Evelyn needs a voice. And you need to give her that chance to be a superhero, to use her superpowers, which is love, which is patience, which is compassion, which is the feeling of never giving up because I will make it work, because it’s not for myself, but for my family, the people that I love,” said Yeoh. “So Evelyn was so important in that way.” “Everything had to be accentuated, you have to see the weariness on her face, and then in the way she walks, it’s always with the slouch,” said Yeoh. Merle Oberon, star of the 1935 film “The Night Angel,” received the same honor, but was never open about being of Asian descent for fear of losing out on leading roles. “It would make it more acceptable.” “For us to be promoting a movie for a year, it’s hard work. “It’d gotten to the norm. Please just get me nominated.’ And then you are thinking, ‘If I don’t get nominated, all these people will be so goddamn disappointed,’” the actress said. We want to be seen, we want to be heard, and tonight you’ve shown us that it is possible, and I’m grateful.” But as she acknowledged in her SAG Awards speech, saying “I know I’m up against titans, rightly so,” Yeoh is in a tight race with two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett, who gave a tour de force performance in “TÁR” that recently earned her [a BAFTA Award](https://www.indiewire.com/2023/02/bafta-awards-2023-winners-list-1234811598/). The dramedy, helmed by writer-director duo Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, follows a middle-aged Chinese immigrant named Evelyn who is swept into a zany, heart-rending, multi-versal adventure that revitalizes the emotional bonds she has with her husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan) and daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu).

The A24 hit may be on the same path that took Parasite and CODA to the best-picture Oscar.

Notably, while A24 previously won a best-picture Oscar with Moonlight, this is the studio’s first SAG ensemble victory. Other instances of SAG leading the way in Academy forecasting include when underdogs like Spotlight and Parasite went all the way with the actors guild, despite other precursors like BAFTA passing them over. CODA went on to win with the Producers Guild, as Everything Everywhere did last night, and then the top Oscar. With several major guild wins as well as a dominant showing at the Critics Choice Awards last month, Everything Everywhere remains in pole position for the top Oscar. Along with Banshees, Everything Everywhere competed for SAG’s ensemble prize opposite fellow best-picture nominees The Fabelmans and Women Talking, both of which went home empty-handed with the guild, as well as the star-studded Babylon, which the Academy only nominated below the line in categories like production design and original score. The beloved A24 film won the top ensemble award from the Screen Actors Guild, an increasingly crucial bellwether in the race for best picture.

Although the film takes place in a number of different realities — one in which humans have hot-dog fingers, another in which there’s no intelligent life whatsoever — its most important one is the universe where the world can be saved with a hug. As [94-year-old cast member James Hong](https://www.vulture.com/2023/02/watch-james-hong-speech-for-eeao-win.html) said onstage at the SAG Awards, when he was starting out, leading Asian roles had been played by white actors in yellowface: “Producers said Asians are not box office. That’s a haul only the heaviest of Oscars hitters obtain — in the era of the preferential ballot, just Birdman, Argo, and The King’s Speech have done it. Even before its big wins, the awards strategists I surveyed conceded that the film would be hard to beat. There are nearly infinite reasons why this was not the way the race was predicted to go. On that front, Supporting Actor is a near lock and Best Director likely as well. Each of these individually would be a plumb prize for any awards hopeful: PGA because it uses the same preferential ballot the Oscars do; SAG because it represents actors, the Academy’s largest branch.

The 60-year-old Malaysian star became the first performer of south-east Asian descent to be nominated in the best actress category and Yeoh could be heading for a history-making win. If it does take home the award, it’ll be a resounding victory for original thinkers and original stories. Having picked up prizes at most of the major awards this season (and given the As an exploration of generational trauma, the burden of regret and the meaning of life, it is genuinely affecting. Just as the story revolves around a woman who has been overlooked and ignored, you can sense that Yeoh, a bona fide action superstar who often has to play second or third fiddle in her Hollywood outings, knows that this is finally her time to shine. All those ideas would be dismissed as mere gimmicks if the film didn’t have any heart to it, and that’s something Everything Everywhere All at Once has in buckets. I wouldn’t be surprised if Academy voters decided to play it safe by plumping for something cosy and familiar like As she inhabits all the different versions of Evelyn across the parallel worlds, she delivers a phenomenal, multifaceted turn that is fierce, goofy and empathic. Clearly, this is film-making that resonates with audiences on a deep emotional level. It’s increasingly rare these days for independent films to become commercial hits, but Everything Everywhere All at Once grossed more than $100m worldwide thanks to good old-fashioned word of mouth, with many fans heading back to the cinema for multiple viewings. And that’s exactly why it would be a worthy winner. Or fight sequences using a giant butt plug and a fanny pack as weapons?
