Player ratings from Wembley as Casemiro shines for Man Utd on a day when Erik ten Hags side had to rely on the strength of their defence; Bruno Guimaraes ...
The Brazilian's physical presence was key for Newcastle in the midfield battle and he held on to the ball consistently to give his side control for large periods. He showed no fear on a big occasion but just could not find a way through. His experience was important for Newcastle on a huge day in the club's history. He missed a good chance to halve the deficit just before half-time. Man Utd's goldenboy did not get the goal in the end but produced a neat flick to Wout Weghorst before getting the ball back for Man Utd's second. Assisted Rashford's shot that Sven Botman deflected in for the second with a well-timed pass. Could not quite live up to his goal against Barcelona, sending a tame shot wide of the post in the second half under little pressure on the edge of the box. He delivered when it counted, though, to help end his side's six-year trophy drought - even if the goal was not awarded to him. He was sometimes guilty of a few loose passes, but more than made up for it with his reading of the game. He produced a big reflex stop to deny Allan Saint-Maximin in the first half when Newcastle were putting Man Utd under intense pressure. It was Shaw's delivery that unlocked the game for Man Utd as Casemiro headed in their opening goal. Martinez also produced a vital block to foil Bruno Guimaraes in the second half.
First half goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford were enough for the Red Devils at Wembley Stadium, besting a Newcastle side who were competing in their first ...
LM - Marcus Rashford - 7/10 - Yes of course he scored. Made a few good saves after that. SUB - Jacob Murphy - N/A. SUB - Jadon Sancho - N/A. His hold-up play and passing were both exceptional. At the start of the second half Newcastle pressed forward with real intent but were largely unable to threatend David de Gea in goal. After holding off his marker, then controlling with his knee, the Weghorst was unable to really test Loris Karius in the Newcastle United goal with his subsequent strike - bobbling a half-volley into the third-choice goalkeeper's mid-riff. SUB - Scott McTominay - N/A. After some neat play from Antony the ball was played up to Weghorst who was able to force Karius into a great save with a venomous long-range effort. The England international. Every single football team needs a Lisandro Martinez. The French wide player shimmied brilliantly past Diogo Dalot on the right hand side of the penalty before forcing David de Gea into a decent save at his near post.
Manchester United 2-0 Newcastle United: There were big performances in defence as Erik ten Hag's side lifted their first trophy in six years at Wembley.
Newcastle were below their best defensively and the goal they conceded from a set piece was cheap. He should have done better on Manchester United’s second goal but was unlucky to be beaten by a deflection. Unlucky to be denied by a brilliant Karius save and did enough to justify his inclusion overall. United’s captain was below his best but it’s a sign of their progress that the team didn’t struggle because of it. Played with confidence on the right following his big goal against Barcelona in midweek. The ‘mosquito’ was up to his usual tricks.
Man United beat Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final and here are how the players rated at Wembley.
Influential whenever he got on the ball and he rose to beat Loris Karius. One of the few who managed the game sensibly at 2-0. Booked for a cynical foul on Saint-Maximin early on and was skinned by him for Newcastle's best chance at 0-0.
Manchester United's £65m summer singing has made a career out of winning big finals and put on a show again at Wembley. Manchester United player ratings ...
Competing in a first major final since 1999 was never going to be an easy task for Newcastle – regardless of the money that has got them this far. This is a final and in finals only the result is king. Allan Saint-Maximin – Was Newcastle’s main outlet to run at the United defence, and forced Ten Hag to sub off the booked Dalot. Joelinton – The most obscure of Newcastle’s attacking cohort, Joelinton was eventually booked for letting his frustrations spill over. Sean Longstaff – Spent the first 20 minutes dominating the midfield and providing the link through to attack. Booked for complaining to the referee. Kieran Trippier – Pushed forward as usual and had command of Rashford’s flank for much of the game. Loris Karius – Couldn’t do anything about the first goal but could arguably have reacted better to the deflection for the second. Learned to step away from the physical Botman and Schar, and open a pocket for others to run into. Bruno Fernandes – Had one of his quieter games for United but nevertheless was quick to distribute out wide when the ball fell to him. Was able to hold the ball up well and helped cover Saint-Maximin’s runs when not in possession. Casemiro was the metronome of this United side once again and got the fans going with his meaty tackles and precision passing.
