The outspoken and polarizing Ekre entered into the mainstream of Estonian politics in the 2019 election, when it emerged as the third-largest party with nearly 18% of the vote. But we have been very critical of the government because they have not assessed the risk to Estonia and to Estonian security and defence.” Ekre party leader Martin Helme, the prime minister’s main challenger, faulted Ms Kallas for the country’s inflation rate of 18.6%, one of the EU’s highest, and accused her of undermining Estonia’s defences by giving weapons to Ukraine. Ms Kallas has ruled out being in a government with Ekre due to ideological differences, and is likely to turn to former coalition partner the Centre Party and outgoing coalition partners, the small conservative Fatherland party and the Social Democrats, for a pact. A Baltic nation of 1.3 million people that borders Russia to the east, Estonia broke away from the Soviet Union in 1991 and has taken a clear Western course, joining Nato and the European Union. Ms Kallas faced a challenge from the far-right populist Ekre party, which seeks to limit the Baltic nation’s exposure to the Ukraine crisis and blames the current government for Estonia’s high inflation rate.

Greek Prime Minister grieves over train accident (BOL News)

The country's biggest railway accident in years has been acknowledged by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the prime minister of Greece.

Several of the passengers on board were teenagers going home after a long weekend. “As prime minister, I owe a sincere apology to everyone, but especially to the victims’ families. On Sunday, new upheaval erupted, with sights of protestors and police fighting in Athens that are anticipated to be witnessed all throughout the nation. In the wake of the catastrophe, the nation’s transport minister resigned, and a train workers’ union went on strike, accusing the government of failing to maintain the infrastructure. Two trains traveling in opposing directions shouldn’t be able to “be on the same track and not be observed by anyone,” according to Mitsotakis. At least 57 people were killed and numerous others were injured when a passenger train carrying more than 350 people collided with a freight train on Tuesday evening in Tempi, close to the city of Larissa.

In his statement, Mr Marape confirmed he knew Don Matheson from playing golf but said he had "no knowledge of the alleged financial transactions or the relationships" between Mr Matheson, ICTSI and PNG Ports officials. Mr Kiniafa played a key role in coaxing massive funding from the Australian government to upgrade PNG's ports network – and he was in charge of the program until his death. Mr Kiniafa was murdered last year in the PNG highlands town of Goroka following a drunken dispute with a friend. The ABC and OCCRP revealed the apparent payments in relation to Mr Kiniafa included fees for a champion Australian racehorse Mr Matheson co-owned with Mr Kiniafa, and $20,000 for a chair for a dental clinic owned by Mr Kiniafa's wife. ICTSI said it hired Mr Matheson for work outside PNG and it was unaware of any payments to PNG Ports officials. The ABC's Background Briefing and the OCCRP revealed questionable payments involving then top PNG Ports officials Fego Kiniafa and Stanley Alphonse around the time a major contract was awarded to a multinational ports operator, ICTSI in 2017.
