1290 Weber St. – Today's Alameda Treasure, Part 1 (Alameda Post)

The beautiful Queen Anne style home at 1290 Weber St holds a lot of memories, including a scandal regarding the son of an Alameda founder.

In our next installment, we’ll look further into the lives and deaths of the Chipmans of Weber Street, see William F. And so the history of the Chipmans at this home was a relatively short one, and perhaps not an altogether happy one. On that day, Sophie appeared in court to file a petition of legal separation “for the wrongs that William Farragut Chipman had afflicted upon her.” Mrs. In 1886, the directory listed William as a postal clerk, with his residence at “Weber near the Bay,” which was another way of describing the family home at 1270 Weber St. Koppitz, one of Alameda’s attractive young ladies.” By 1893 William was listed as the first owner of 1290 Weber St., a Queen Anne style home costing $2,700. She would dedicate the rest of her life to her family and to developing their land holdings. Sophie Chipman, and they must have enjoyed living on the same street as the Chipman family home at 1270 Weber, and the nearby 1315 Caroline St., where William’s sister Alice lived by 1896. By the time Chipman died in 1873 at just 53 years old, the family was living in San Francisco, having abandoned Alameda and its problems shortly before. Dwinelle (1816-1881), a lawyer and politician who introduced the act that established the University of California, and became one of its first regents. William Worthington Chipman (1820-1873) was born in Vermont, grew up in Ohio where he studied law, and came to San Francisco in 1850. Looking into its history, I learned that the original owner of this house was William F. Dame in distress: Susan Devoy opens up about 'humiliating ... (New Zealand Herald)

Dame Susan Devoy: "If I had to do it all again, I don't know if it would be different."

At least at home if I wake up, there is something to preoccupy you, but out there it was challenging.” While she is through the worst of the hot flashes and brain fog, Devoy says the most difficult thing to cope with is how menopause has completely changed her sleep cycle. “But it would be a real blessing. Devoy was almost forced to leave the show when a cut on her leg became so badly infected, she started hallucinating. When asked what the harder challenge was – menopause or Treasure Island – she doesn’t hesitate before answering. “You only get one chance, but if I had to do it all again, I don’t know if it would be different,” she says. “I was petrified in that water,” recalls Devoy. “I thought I had a fighting chance. I just wanted to win the money for The Aunties.” Instead, they threw me a life ring, and I lay on my back and kicked while I tried not to cry. So, having to dive for sacks of puzzle pieces in the ocean was way outside her comfort zone. But the second she saw their first challenge was in the ocean, all her confidence slipped away.

Medieval Treasure Uncovered by Metal Detectorist in the Netherlands (ARTnews)

The trove included four golden ear pendants, two strips of gold leaf, and 39 silver coins.

It’s ultimately unclear why the treasure was buried. The metal detectorist had to keep it a secret for two years, while experts at the National Museum of Antiquities cleaned, researched, and dated the objects. By that time, however, the jewelry would have already been at least two centuries old.
