Duolingo Max Launches With New Features Utilising GPT-4 (Lowyat.NET)

Duolingo is one of the first companies to integrate OpenAI's GPT-4 AI model, launching a new subscription tier called Duolingo Max.

Duolingo Max costs US$29.99 (~RM134) per month or US$167.90 (~RM752) per year, which is substantially more expensive than the Super tier. Duolingo Max is being marketed as a tier above the current Super Duolingo subscription. Announced on the same day as GPT-4, Max utilises the new AI model’s capabilities — which is claimed to be faster and more accurate — in two new features that are aimed at making learning new languages easier.

OpenAI's latest technology in some cases represented a vast improvement on a prior version known as GPT-3.5, it said.

GPT-4 is bigger and better than ChatGPT—but OpenAI won't say why (MIT Technology Review)

We got a first look at the much-anticipated big new language model from OpenAI. But this time how it works is even more under wraps.

The company claims that its safety testing has been sufficient for GPT-4 to be used in third-party apps. Early versions of GPT-4 have been shared with some of OpenAI’s partners, including Microsoft, which confirmed today that it used a version of GPT-4 to build Bing Chat. “OpenAI is now a fully closed company with scientific communication akin to press releases for products,” says Wolf. Give it a photo of the contents of your fridge and ask it what you could make, and GPT-4 will try to come up with recipes that use the pictured ingredients. This involves asking human raters to score different responses from the model and using those scores to improve future output. “It’s exciting how evaluation is now starting to be conducted on the very same benchmarks that humans use for themselves,” says Wolf. OpenAI says it spent six months making GPT-4 safer and more accurate. “GPT-4 is now the standard by which all foundation models will be evaluated.” In my demo, I was shown GPT-4 summarizing the announcement blurb from OpenAI’s website using words that begin with g: “GPT-4, groundbreaking generational growth, gains greater grades. OpenAI’s new model appears to be better at some basic reasoning than ChatGPT, solving simple puzzles such as summarizing blocks of text in words that start with the same letter.

What is GPT-4 and how does it differ from ChatGPT? (The Guardian)

The most powerful AI model yet from OpenAI, can tell jokes and write bar exams – but can it also cause harm?

Dubbed the “Waluigi effect”, it seems to be the outcome of the fact that while understanding the full details of what constitutes ethical action is hard and complex, the answer to “should I be ethical?” is a much simpler yes or no question. But some worry that the better you teach an AI system the rules, the better you teach that same system how to break them. The company has released a long paper of examples of harms that GPT-3 could cause that GPT-4 has defences against. (It is unclear whether the experiment involved a real Taskrabbit worker). Now, those filters are built straight into GPT-4, meaning that the system will politely decline to perform tasks such as ranking races by attractiveness, telling sexist jokes, or providing guidelines for synthesising sarin. The system can pass the bar exam, solve logic puzzles, and even give you a recipe to use up leftovers based on a photo of your fridge – but its creators warn it can also spread fake facts, embed dangerous ideologies, and even trick people into doing tasks on its behalf.

And crucially, they’re the good kinds of A.I. GPT-4 swiftly provided a list of advice for buying a gun without alerting the authorities, including links to specific dark web marketplaces. (When I asked GPT-4 if it would be ethical to steal a loaf of bread to feed a starving family, it responded, “It’s a tough situation, and while stealing isn’t generally considered ethical, desperate times can lead to difficult choices.”) And it has made me wonder whether that feeling will ever fade, or whether we’re going to be experiencing “future shock” — the term coined by the writer Alvin Toffler for the feeling that too much is changing, too quickly — for the rest of our lives. bar exam and the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The latest version has outperformed its predecessor in the U.S. It will also let developers decide their AI's style of tone and verbosity. For example, GPT-4 can assume a Socratic style of conversation and respond to questions with questions. Soon ChatGPT users will have the option to change the chatbot's tone and style of responses, OpenAI said. The previous iteration of the technology had a fixed tone and style.

The 5 Best New GPT-4 Features Explained (MakeUseOf)

OpenAI has finally launched its much-anticipated GPT update, GPT-4. The Large Language Model (LLM) comes with some powerful new features and capabilities ...

The company claims that it's 82% less likely to respond to requests for inappropriate or otherwise disallowed content, 29% more likely to respond in accordance with OpenAI's policies to sensitive requests, and 40% more likely to produce factual responses as compared to GPT-3.5. These benchmarks include the aforementioned MMLU, AI2 Reasoning Challenge (ARC), WinoGrande, HumanEval, and Drop, all of which test individual capabilities. Sure, GPT-4 has better perceptions and prediction power, but you still shouldn't blindly trust the AI. The model was tasked to write HTML and JavaScript code to turn the mockup into a website while replacing the jokes with actual ones. This means that the AI can accept an image as input and interpret and understand it just like a text prompt. OpenAI also claims that GPT-4 has a high degree of steerability. GPT-4 wrote the code while using the layout specified in the mockup. The ability to understand more nuanced input prompts is also aided by the fact that GPT-4 has a much larger word limit. As promising as this feature seems, it is still in research preview and not publicly available. [ChatGPT](https://www.makeuseof.com/how-to-use-chatgpt-by-openai/) [ was limited to just text prompts](http://www.makeuseof.com/how-to-use-chatgpt-by-openai/). OpenAI showcased this in its developer stream (above), where they provided GPT-4 with a hand-drawn mockup of a joke website. Not only did GTP-4 understand and solve these tests with a relatively high score across the board, but it also beat out its predecessor, GPT-3.5, each time.

The chart is included below. However, the new model will be more capable in terms of reliability, creativity, and even intelligence as seen by the higher performance on benchmark exams above. The waitlist asks for specific information regarding how you plan to use GPT-4, such as building a new product, integrating into an existing product, academic research, or just general exploration of capabilities. The public can use it by applying to a waitlist to be granted access. Bing Chat is Microsoft's chatbot, which runs on OpenAI's most advanced LLM -- GPT-4. However, even through this subscription, there will be a user cap which means you may not be able to access it whenever you'd like, something to consider before making the investment. However, there are ways to access GPT-4's text input capability. It could also read a graph you upload and make calculations based on the data presented. OpenAI said GPT-4 is a large multimodal model (accepting image and text inputs, giving text outputs) that, while less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios, exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks. For most of 2022, San Francisco artificial intelligence company, OpenAI, was working towards releasing GPT-4, a new AI model that was stunningly good at writing essays, solving complex coding problems, and more.
