In the review, Baroness Casey said a "boys' club" culture was rife and the force could be dismantled if it does not improve. A police chief has described a damning report of the Metropolitan Police as "appalling" and has maintained action has been taken in her force.

London police has a high percentage of firearms officers, a source of toxic, macho culture.

[over half of Londoners](https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/metropolitan-police-public-trust-sadiq-khan-cressida-dick-b1000778.html) perceive the Met as a reliable institution, trust in the police has eroded nationwide. [currently sits at 8.1%](https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/police-workforce-england-and-wales-31-march-2022/police-workforce-england-and-wales-31-march-2022), compared to a general [population rate of 18.3%](https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/culturalidentity/ethnicity/bulletins/ethnicgroupenglandandwales/census2021#ethnic-groups-in-england-and-wales). And [research from the US](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33574207/) finds inconclusive evidence of the effectiveness of diversity drives in decreasing police violence towards ethnic minorities. Central to the drive to diversify policing is the belief that officers belonging to minority groups can help [build bridges between police and communities](https://www.justice.gov/file/1437336/download). Disability discrimination in Met police is 'baked into the system', says ... (Disability News Service)

Discrimination faced by disabled staff within the Metropolitan police has become “baked into the system”, a review of the force's culture and standards has ...

It is run and owned by disabled journalist John Pring and has been from its launch in April 2009. “I don’t know what it will take to change. “We do have a culture of bullying… He mentioned disabled people only in passing in his letter and not in relation to the discrimination faced by his disabled staff that was exposed by the review. She said there was a “thread” of disablism throughout the report, in the reports of discrimination, bullying, employment tribunals, grievances and “the appalling language used to describe disabled people”, which showed it had become “so much a part of the fabric”. [a letter responding to the Casey report](https://www.met.police.uk/SysSiteAssets/media/downloads/met/about-us/baroness-casey-review/update-march-2023/commissioner-letter-to-baroness-casey.pdf) (PDF), the Met’s commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, said it was “a powerful and persuasive call for urgent, deep rooted and long-lasting change”. She said: “All forms of discrimination, abuse, bias and prejudice need to be called out and addressed if the Met are serious about rooting out the predators and abusers that are hiding in plain sight.” “I am disappointed that the review hasn’t gone more thoroughly into this aspect of discrimination, but I hope that the report now opens up a chance to look into and investigate disability discrimination and [other forms of discrimination not mentioned in the report].” It said the review matched its own findings, that disablism and issues relating to disablism “are not prioritised and there is no dedicated work being done in the MPS on this, with insufficient data to ensure these issues are addressed”. The report says the number of employment tribunal claims brought by disabled people was “striking” and that the force “has not shown sufficient curiosity as to why this apparent pattern has emerged, and what if anything they could learn from it”, which was “a source of frustration” to disabled people working in the Met. An autistic detective in the Met who was bullied out of her dream job by the “toxic and discriminatory” actions of her managers told Disability News Service this week that she believed the Met was a disablist institution. Discrimination faced by disabled staff within the Metropolitan police has become “baked into the system”, a review of the force’s culture and standards has found.

Court lowers damages for families of three men killed by police (The Star Online)

The case was sent back to the High Court for damages assessment. A three-judge panel chaired by Justice Azizah Nawawi made the adjustment after allowing parts of the appeal by the prosecution in the case. Dissatisfied with the amount, the families appealed to the High Court for a reassessment and on June 30, 2021, the court awarded the RM1.5mil total compensation. They named the Shah Alam district police chief, the Selangor police chief, the Inspector-General of Police and the government of Malaysia as respondents. However, on Sept 1, 2016, the Court of Appeal overturned the ruling and found the police liable. In the decision, the panel set aside RM100,000 in general damages for each family and substituted it with RM10,000 each for bereavement damages.

Ukraine war: How a Russian child's drawing sparked a police ... (BBC News)

Masha, 12, is now in a children's home after Russian authorities placed her father under house arrest.

"Return Masha to her father!" The images there remind me of the patriotic wall I saw in the centre of town. "The Russian authorities want everyone to toe the line. "Everything in the flat reminds him of her. The Yefremov Juvenile Affairs Commission is taking legal action to officially restrict Alexei's parental rights. The family's problems only began after the girl drew that picture." They should have invited Masha, too, and spoken to her," Vladimir says. Under the rules of his house arrest Alexei is only permitted contact with his lawyer, the investigator and the penitentiary service. To the left is a Ukrainian flag with the words "Glory to Ukraine"; on the right, the Russian tricolour and the inscription "No to war!" "And they told him that he was bringing up his daughter in a bad way." Giant photographs of masked Russian soldiers with guns and supersized letters Z and V - symbols of the country's so-called "special military operation" in Ukraine. His daughter Masha has - for now - been sent to a children's home.
