Bank of England hikes interest rates again following inflation shock (CNN)

The Bank of England hiked interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point Thursday, extending its long-running fight to rein in prices after a surprise ...

The Office for Budget Responsibility, the government’s fiscal watchdog, expects inflation to fall rapidly, reaching around 3% in the final quarter of this year, helped by falling energy prices and further easing of supply bottlenecks. It added that the UK banking system “remains resilient.” The Bank of England’s job is made even more complicated by the fact that the UK economy is expected to shrink this year. “With a flagging economy and lower energy costs still set to drive a significant fall in inflation this year, despite February’s surprise increase, the case for cutting interest rates is only likely to grow,” commented Suren Thiru, economics director at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. The Bank of England said it would “continue to monitor closely” any effects from the banking crisis on credit conditions faced by households and firms. The Bank of England targets an inflation rate of 2%. Bank of England Raises Rates to 4.25% as Inflation Persists (The New York Times)

Policymakers approved a quarter-point increase, to 4.25 percent, while affirming that British banks were “resilient.”

“The persistence of inflation appears more worrying in the U.K. Those prices “tend to be volatile and could therefore prove less persistent,” according to the minutes of the bank’s meeting. To some extent, those risks materialized in the surprising upturn in Wednesday’s data, which showed food prices rising in February at their fastest pace in 45 years and a measure of services inflation increasing. Bailey said in a video posted by the bank on Thursday. The Bank of England forecast that the inflation rate would fall significantly this year, and average about 4 percent around the end of the year. But it noted that, in Britain, wholesale bank funding costs, a measure of how much it costs banks to borrow money, particularly for short periods, had risen, a sign of increased risk in the banking sector. He argued that the central bank would pause rate increases because wage growth was easing and energy prices were lower. At the moment, “it was unclear how credit conditions and economic activity might be affected by recent banking-sector stress in a number of advanced economies,” the Bank of England said. The central bank had forecast that the inflation rate would fall to 9.9 percent. And wage growth has been weaker than expected, easing policymakers’ concerns that high wages in the private sector would make it harder to return inflation to the bank’s 2 percent target. Previously, the bank had shifted its tone to indicate that future interest rate increases were not a given. and Swiss banking systems](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/21/business/regional-banks-depositors-fears.html) [spurred global central bankers into protective moves](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/19/business/economy/federal-reserve-banks-dollar-access.html) to shore up financial stability.

Harry Kane makes history as England earn narrow victory against Italy (MARCA.com)

Italy hosted England at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples on Thursday evening as both sides looked to open their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign ...

He was sent to the dressing rooms after a crunching tackle. It comes through to the debutant Mateo Retegui and he beats Jordan Pickford with a shot across goal from close range. Nicolo Barella is fouled by Harry Maguire and the referee allows play to go on. Since taking the lead, England enjoyed full control of the game. Italy's early dominance was short-lived, however, as Declan Rice converted for England in the 13th minute. The incident was reviewed by VAR officials and, after a trip to the pitch side monitor, the referee awarded a penalty and the chance for England to increase their lead.

Euro qualifying: England, Harry Kane convincing in Italy win (ESPN.co.uk)

England got their first-ever competitive win against Italy in Italy, and it was the perfect way to put their World Cup exit behind them.

England striker Harry Kane on the meaning of the result: "It is the first time England have won in Italy for a long, long time. Playing for England is probably my greatest feeling in football and I want to do it for as long as possible. Thank you to everyone in here and everyone who has made this dream a reality." A few minutes from halftime, Italian defender Giovanni Di Lorenzo was caught with his hand touching the ball in the box, possibly interfering with Harry Kane being able to win it. I can't remember what he said but I'm sure it was a on a video as everything is videoed these days and nothing stays in house. Italy began to take control of the midfield battle and mistakes crept into England's play, most obviously a palpably avoidable red card for Luke Shaw. To be a part of that is amazing. England were much the better side in the first half and deserved to extend their lead when [Giovanni Di Lorenzo](http://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/155904/Giovanni-Di-Lorenzo) was adjudged to have handled in the box, a decision Serbian referee Srdjan Jovanovic awarded on VAR review, allowing Kane to set the new England scoring record. Kane's clever hold-up play, particularly in the first half, was a reminder his ability extends far beyond goal-scoring. One of the few remaining questions England have to answer for under Southgate is their inconsistent record against the very best sides. Nothing will completely take away the pain of missing a penalty in England's World Cup quarterfinal defeat top France three months ago. This was also Southgate's 50th win as England manager, from 82 games -- a number only surpassed by Walter Winterbottom (78) and Sir Alf Ramsey (69).

England held on amid a second-half Italian onslaught to claim a 2-1 win in Naples as they got their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign off to an excellent start. Harry Kane becomes England's all-time record scorer in qualifier ... (The Guardian)

Harry Kane scored a penalty to become England's all-time record goalscorer in their 2-1 defeat of Italy, with the defender Luke Shaw also shown a red card.

From back to front – and that included the goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford – the passing was on point. The turnaround was remarkable. Italy could not get near to them on the ball, the combinations up through the thirds easy on the eye. Italy are, of course, the reigning European champions, although it feels as if their second failure in a row to qualify for the World Cup is defining them more at present. A win is a win and this was a big one, England’s most difficult assignment of the group passed already. He was central to England’s barnstorming start as they controlled the tempo and the ball, looking extremely confident on it. It was Kane to Grealish and he did well to release Jude Bellingham, who advanced and unloaded a vicious drive that Gianluigi Donnarumma tipped over. What a moment it was for the captain. When they play at this stadium – especially this season, the Scudetto so close that everyone in town has started to prepare for the party of the millennium, connecting the buildings in those narrow streets with blue and white sheets – it can feel like an out-of-body experience. The rather key difference this time was that England had scored the first two goals. It ought to have been 3-0 in first-half stoppage time only for Jack Grealish to miscue wide of a gaping goal. It was a night when a Harry Kane penalty conversion positively overflowed with narrative drama.

Crude oil prices were in the black, though gas prices were in retreat early in the US trading session. Markets were mixed on Thursday, with the FTSE 100 in London down 0.82 per cent and the Dow in New York up by 0.75 per cent as of 9:45 am. Core inflation remains elevated, but there's some relief in the form of crude oil and natural gas prices. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said that while the recent banking concerns did not deter a 10th consecutive rate hike, it has given the committee some pause about how it will approach future increases. On growth, the bank said it expected gross domestic product in the nation's economy to increase slightly, bucking last month's forecast for a 0.4 per cent contraction. After falling to 10.1 per cent over the 12-month period ending in January, inflation climbed another 0.3 per cent last month, higher than the bank expected.

'Complete forward Kane can push record into distance' (BBC Sport)

Harry Kane deserves to stand in the company of England greats and can push his scoring record far into the distance of others, writes Phil McNulty.

He can link play from all parts, has a prodigious work-rate and offered so much more than goals in his international career. As at club level, the trophy is missing. Such are the high standards he maintains, there is no reason why Kane cannot end his England career with a total that will take an awful lot of beating - and a record that will need a truly great striker to overtake it. What should be remembered after this night in Naples is England have been privileged to have such an outstanding striker at their disposal, someone who has every right to stand in the company of those he overtook in the 44th minute of their first win against Italy in Italy since 1961. And then there was the heartache of the World Cup semi-final loss to Croatia in Russia in 2018, the Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy at Wembley and the personal heartache of that France game in Qatar. The heartfelt congratulations from Rooney and Lineker was an accurate reflection of the respect in which Kane is held throughout the game, both as a striker and inspirational leader of this England team - a personality so hugely admired by his colleagues.

Bank of England boss urges firms to hold back price rises or risk ... (The Guardian)

Andrew Bailey says interest rates will have to rise again unless inflation falls.

Responding to Bailey’s remarks, the Unite general secretary, Sharon Graham, said a “lacklustre acknowledgment” by the central bank that companies had played a role in rising prices was a welcome development. “Andrew Bailey’s lacklustre acknowledgment of the role price rises are having on inflation is a step forward after years of targeting workers,” she said. “When companies set prices I understand that they have to reflect the costs that they face. They need to wake up.” “The profits of Britain’s biggest firms have spiked 89%. Bank of England Set to Follow Suit After Fed & ECB Rate Hikes (tastytrade)

The markets punished the Fed but praised the ECB as both central banks pressed on with rate hike plans to fight inflation despite banking crisis fears.

The markets rewarded the ECB for going through with its rate hike with a brave face on: European bank shares rose alongside the Euro. Officials may not be ready to endorse such a thing, especially after the recent troubles in the banking sector. Economists penciled in a decline to 9.9 percent ahead of the release. They punished the Fed for even an inkling of caution: stocks fell on Wall Street and the US Dollar broadly weakened. The time has come for the Bank of England (BOE) to take its turn at trying to reconcile an ongoing battle against inflation with a banking crisis that ripped through global markets this month. The markets are now priced for one more rate hike before the end of the year if today’s increase goes forward. The BOE has been treated to a timely reminder of the price growth problem just earlier this week. How will the Bank of England fare?

Mancini had made four substitutions by the time England made their first, with Foden coming on for Grealish in the 69th minute. Italy did not make it to the World Cup. The talent pool is not as deep as it could be. At half-time it was possible to imagine Mancini marching into the home dressing room and simply saying: “Lads, it’s England.” There was an instant shift in the second half. England were making errors in possession and inviting pressure with their passivity. In the final of the Euros Southgate had reverted to caution, sacrificing a midfielder by playing a back three, leaving Rice and Kalvin Phillips outnumbered in the middle. Kane was outstanding, confusing the Italian defence with his movement and bullying them with his strength. The potential was obvious during the first half in Naples. There was a glaring miss from Jack Grealish, who passed up an open goal moments after Harry Kane had become his country’s record goalscorer, and a constant sense that England were too quick, physical and talented for the Italians, particularly with Jorginho and Marco Verratti looking too old to compete with Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice in midfield. The 19-year-old has transformed the mood.

Working-age Muslims who were economically inactive were the most likely to be studying, at 13.8%, compared with 7.3% of the overall population. The government must begin levelling up for young British Muslims by addressing key areas of concern such as health inequalities and access to higher education and housing, while also tackling barriers to securing and retaining employment. The ONS suggests the younger age profile of this group is a contributing factor as to why Muslims in England and Wales had the lowest rates of employment. Those who identified as Muslims are generally a younger cohort than other religions and more likely to be studying.
