Original DnD Movie Director Explains Why He Left Honor Among ... (Screen Rant)

Chris McKay, original director of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, explains why he parted ways with the movie despite being a big DnD fan.

And the fact that [there are] like Beholders and things like that they put in the movie, and bugbears and owlbears, that was kind of what we did. So to be able to do something in that world, but also try to tell it through a modern lens, and try to do it through a heist, like it’s this heist team going in, and then the specialist who can do this stuff, and supposed to do that, and that kind of thing, that, to me, was a lot of fun, to just imagine what that would have been and how you can shoot that in a fun, kinetic way. I think, from what I understand—I’ve still not seen the finished movie because I’ve been working on Renfield—but I hear [there are] a lot of the scenes that Mike and I worked on and then Mike wrote that are in the movie or at least some versions of them. I was approached to direct that movie, and I started developing it, and what we were developing—Mike Gilio and I, the writer I was working with—we were sort of developing a heist movie. And so that was kind of the way that we went about it, and we developed a treatment that the studio liked, and Mike went off and wrote a really great script. He shared his excitement for the latest Dungeons & Dragons adaptation as a long-time fan of the games but ultimately had to part ways with the project as he turned his attention to making his live-action directorial debut with the Chris Pratt-led Tomorrow War.

REVIEW: Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' Charm ... (CBR)

A straightforward fantasy story told with charm and enthusiasm, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is as fun as it seems. Here's CBR's Review.

While it might not revolutionize the fantasy genre, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a very solid movie. Self-aware without being meta, sincere without being overly sweet, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves finds the sweet spot for fantasy adventure that audiences of all ages can dive into. Rodriguez is the MVP though, imbuing a fairly funny character with a surprising amount of understated emotion and vulnerability. Directed by Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley -- with the pair also co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Gilio -- Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a fairly standard fantasy epic that knows exactly what it is. Becoming the Lord of Neverwinter with the help of the villainous Red Wizard Sofina (Daisy Head), Forge has become Kira's adopted father -- and has no intention of letting Edgin ruin a good thing. [a staple for fantasy fans for decades](https://www.cbr.com/why-dnd-movie-not-like-jumanji-trapped-in-game/), giving players around the world the chance to reimagine themselves as heroes of colorful and dangerous realms.

From Ouija: Origin of Evil to Escape Room, these amazing movies are all based on board games.

[Escape Room](https://collider.com/tag/escape-room/) takes inspiration from the popular real-life escape rooms and the Escape Room board game. [Battleship](https://collider.com/tag/battleship/) gets a makeover as it comes to life on the big screen as a science-fiction action movie directed by Peter Berg. Six strangers, Zoey (Taylor Russell), Ben (Logan Miller), Amanda (Deborah Ann Woll), Mike (Tyler Labine), and Danny (Nik Dodani) travel to a mysterious building to escape the room and win $10,000. The Pokémon franchise includes tv shows, video games, and trading cards, but players are even given the option to play it as a board game. Through the movie, the audience gets a peek into their competitive world as it delves deeper into what it takes to win. It took the core elements of the board game such as the high-stakes adventure and the various obstacles to overcome and turned it into an action-packed video game adventure with humor and heart. Even its title is inspired by the brilliant move that is able to turn a losing or close game into a winning one. Although Zathura is not specifically based on a real game at the time of release, the movie is about playing a space-themed board game. This [revival of the franchise](https://collider.com/movie-reboots-that-failed/) gave its audiences a well-thought-out haunted house thriller with exorcism scares to keep you awake at night. During its initial release, the board game premise was transcended by weaving together multiple storylines and sending different endings to each theater to create a classic whodunit mystery-comedy. The spirit they call upon possesses the youngest daughter, Doris (Lulu Wilson) as the family must save her and force the spirit back to where it came from. Movies based on board games offer a unique opportunity to expand the world and lore of the game themselves.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Review – Die Hard (Superherohype.com)

Our Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves review suggests that this could become a formative fantasy classic for this generation.

For its characters, for entertainment value, and the creation of a larger world that suggests many more possibilities, Honor Among Thieves casts a glorious spell. With a lot of work and plenty of corporate treasure, however, all the saving throws clearly paid off. The plot also incorporates moments of game mechanics in creative ways, like Simon the sorcerer (Justice Smith) having a personal dial on his belt to adjust his spell levels. He’s now a mini-despot in the realm of Neverwinter, in league with an evil wizard (Head). We are also a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program. A world filled with all manner of game-specific creatures, with some as mere throwaways but others more integral to the plot. Putting together a team to save the girl and give Forge his comeuppance proves a lot more complicated than it seems, requiring several mini-quests. Bard/spy/thief Edgin (Chris Pine) and his best platonic drinking buddy, Holga the barbarian (Michelle Rodriguez), begin the story in a snowy penitentiary, recounting the betrayal that led them there before breaking out and looking for redemption. [Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves](http://superherohype.com/tag/dungeons-and-dragons-honor-among-thieves) have spoiled too much should know this: They’ve spoiled quite a bit, but completely out of order and context. The new movie balances character-appropriate comedy with high stakes the same way The Princess Bride and the fantasy films of Terry Gilliam did decades ago. You might not be surprised by specific plot points, just as you wouldn’t be surprised in a [D&D](http://superherohype.com/tag/dungeons-and-dragons) game to enter a dungeon and encounter a dragon. It also features a few good frights, including one hair-raising jump-scare, and a decidedly creepy villain in Daisy Head’s red wizard Sofina.

Film Review: 'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves ... (Awards Radar)

Awards Radar seeks to provide objective, thoughtful, and wide-ranging coverage of the awards season, as well as the entertainment world in general.

In a blockbuster landscape where so much of what we see feels like it was created on autopilot, it’s so refreshing to see a film aim for that action-comedy balance and delivering so generously on both fronts. All the praise I’ve lavished upon it must be viewed through the prism of it being a genre film first and foremost. Much was made in the build-up to the film’s release of a style that drew inspiration from more comically-inclined fantasy touchstones like The Princess Bride and Monty Python and the Holy Grail, albeit on the scale of something like Game of Thrones. Friends and partners to the end (any romantic potential is amusingly quashed early on), Edgin and Holga determine that the only way to rescue Kira and take down Forge is to plan a heist around an upcoming tournament. And lest we forget, this is the duo that brought us 2018’s Game Night, which is arguably the best American comedy of the 2010s, so in addition to being a rollicking adventure and a fantastical heist movie, it’s also funny as hell. Much of what we learn about the many locales the story takes us to is communicated visually, and the filmmakers never allow exposition or lore to take precedence over characters and action, a quality that automatically puts it above fellow would-be franchise starters ranging from Eragon to Warcraft.
