The tremor occurred at a depth of about 84 km (52 miles), and moderate shaking was probably felt in western coastal areas of North Sumatra province near the epicenter, as well as light shaking throughout much of North Sumatra and parts of southern Aceh, northern West Sumatra, and northern Riau provinces. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
