Chelsea, Felix frustrated by Liverpool as both teams' top four hopes ... (ESPN)

Chelsea's post-Potter era kicked off with a wasteful performance against a shaky Liverpool side as both sides fight for minor places.

[Mohamed Salah](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/173896/Mohamed-Salah) was rested rather than dropped, as was [Andy Robertson](http://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/104943/Andy-Robertson). But although he performed like a player ready to take off, Felix summed up Chelsea in many ways -- lively, but erratic and with no real finishing touch. Kai Havertz on the sacking of Graham Potter: "We have to take responsibility what's going on. With a reported buy-out fee of £70 million at the end of his loan, however, he will need to do much more to earn a permanent move. It summed up the threat he posed with his direct running and willingness to take the ball. [Trent Alexander-Arnold](http://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/223532/Trent-Alexander-Arnold) was poor at the Etihad, but [Cody Gakpo](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/249524/Cody-Gakpo) was a rare shining light in defeat, yet he was on the bench too. [Report: Chelsea and Liverpool draw](/soccer/match/_/gameId/637891) [Chelsea](/soccer/team?id=363) and [Liverpool](/soccer/team?id=364) extended their miserable [Premier League](/soccer/league/_/name/ENG.1) seasons by playing out a dismal goalless draw at Stamford Bridge in the home team's first game since the sacking of manager Graham Potter. Klopp knows his players better than anyone, but by making so many changes, it gave the message that Liverpool have given up hope of climbing into the top four this season. [Harvey Elliott](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/280806/Harvey-Elliott) meanwhile didn't even make the bench. In this game, Chelsea had the better chances and saw two goals ruled out -- one for offside and the other for handball -- but they showed little sign of a positive bounce under interim manager Bruno Saltor. [Reece James](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/189007/Reece-James) and [Kai Havertz](http://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/231182/Kai-Havertz) saw goals ruled out by VAR for Chelsea and [Mateo Kovacic](http://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/154595/Mateo-Kovacic) missed an easy chance to score in the second-half.

Report: Former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann in talks ... (Bavarian Football Works)

It has been a while since Bayern Munich sacked their former manager Julian Nagelsmann, in favour of former Chelsea FC manager Thomas Tuchel.

As fate had it, a sudden news leak forced the board to come clean and put forth the formal news of his sacking. The contract of five years with the fee of €25 million made one thing very clear — the club believed in his vision enough to entrust a massive, long-term project in his hands. It was sudden and unexpected, for both the fans and an unsuspected Nagelsmann who was enjoying a quiet ski vacation. The Rekordmeister certainly aren’t the kind to throw money around for anyone, but they wanted Nagelsmann and came in ready with a huge amount. Chelsea are currently managed by interim manager Bruno Saltor, who took over after Graham Potter’s sacking. Though it has been lesser than two weeks since the sacking was announced, it feels a lot longer than that because of simply how much has transpired.

The footballing world has been rocked with manager departures recently, and Chelsea could potentially replace Graham Potter with Julien Nagelsmann.

Defensively, the Blues were solid, and with a bit of time, Nagelsmann could potentially be a good fit for Chelsea. Sterling scored after 12 minutes to put the Blues ahead, and they managed to hold out for a huge victory. It was a respectable performance from Chelsea though, with the Blues managing a higher xG than City. A second consecutive away trip for Chelsea, Nagelsmann faced Bournemouth who were in the relegation battle. Like the Forest game, it was a very even battle at Old Trafford, but Nagelsmann was able to pick up a vital three points after Havertz's 25th-minute strike secured a 1-0 win. Chelsea were handed their toughest test under Nagelsmann just four games in, a trip to the Emirates to face Arsenal. Nagelsmann had the chance to return to winning ways as Chelsea hosted Nottingham Forest, and they did just that, albeit narrowly. Just four wins since the start of 2023 led to [Potter's dismissal](https://www.football.london/chelsea-fc/news/breaking-graham-potter-sacked-chelsea-26615397), with Chelsea sitting 11th in the Premier League. In fact, three of Liverpool’s four yellow cards – for Fabinho, Konstantinos Tsimikas and Joel Matip – were issued for fouls on Joao Felix. Enzo’s 14 long passes was again comfortably the highest number of any outfield player, ahead of Koulibaly and Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson with nine each, and our No5 had a decent success rate, finding a team-mate with nine of his attempts. With the two Blues veterans pushing forward and pressuring Liverpool in possession, that denied Jurgen Klopp’s team a route out of defence through the middle of the pitch, while giving our January signing room to dictate the game. That solid base provided by Enzo sitting deep also allowed Kovacic and Kante to roam further, hunting the ball and joining attacks. I wouldn't go to any team but to one that could do important things, which greatly reduces the number. London rivals Tottenham are also eyeing a swoop for the former RB Leipzig manager after they parted ways with Antonio Conte in the March international break. The club legend was sacked in January 2021 just over a month after taking the team to the top of the Premier League table. But the high expectations at Chelsea demand he comes up with an answer with this group. The draw with Liverpool on Tuesday night was a perfect example of their toothlessness right now. The previous year his side had ranked 16th for converting clear-cut chances. But could he have a similarly decisive impact on this current crop? "There are no plans that anyone is aware of at the moment for Lampard to be Chelsea's next permanent manager, but we've seen this happen in the past. If anyone knows about the demands - and ruthlessness - at Chelsea it's Frank Lampard. In his second season, they were playing well and were top of the table about a month before he lost his job because of a poor run of form. "Things went wrong for him in his final month in charge, but people do forget that he did do a good job as the Chelsea manager in extremely difficult circumstances. Chelsea legend on verge of shock return as Blues step up hunt for new manager.

The 44-year-old led Chelsea to fourth in the Premier League and the FA Cup final in his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge. Lampard helped keep Everton in the Premier League last season, but was sacked in January with the Toffees second bottom of the table. In 13 years as a Chelsea player, Lampard won three Premier League titles, the Champions League and remains the club’s all-time leading goalscorer. However, they are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League and travel to defending champions Real Madrid for the first leg of their last-eight tie in seven days’ time. Chelsea sacked Graham Potter on Sunday after a disastrous run of form that has left the club 11th in the Premier League despite spending over $AUD926m on new players in their first season under new owners. Frank Lampard is set to return for a second spell in charge of Chelsea on an interim basis until the end of the season, according to reports on Wednesday.
