Mpox Strikes Malaysia: No Travel, No Problem!

Malaysia's health news just got spicier! We've detected our first mpox case of 2024 and it didn’t come from abroad!

In a surprising turn of events, Malaysia has reported its first mpox case of 2024, and there's a twist – the individual in question has not traveled internationally for the past 21 days. The Ministry of Health (MOH) confirmed the case, which involves a male patient who presented initial symptoms such as fever and a rash, followed by a cough and sore throat. Could this mean mpox is making itself comfortable in our neighborhoods?

This new case is part of a larger trend. Malaysia has been on high alert with 58 suspected cases prior to this confirmation, but our focus has shifted to this particular incident of mpox from the less severe clade 2 variant. Health authorities are investigating how this particular case might have arisen, and whether it indicates a broader risk of community transmission.
